$24M required to build facility "It's the money," Marshall City Manager Marshall City Manager Tom Tarkiewicz said. MSP master plans call for turning the current Coldwater and Battle Creek posts into unmanned local outposts and building a brand new command post near Marshall. Tarkiewicz said the proposal was not well-received by the Calhoun County Commission, which is faced with an Attorney General's opinion the sheriff must locate offices in the county seat. Redstone said a shared facility would mean increased opportunity for collaboration among the three agencies, temporary jail holding facilities, possible some shared personnel and a more central location law enforcement in Calhoun County. Surprise conclusion A surprise conclusion from the consultants was that the consolidation would not save much money for the three departments, Tarkiewicz said. Tarkiewicz said he has not talked to the state about funding. Marshall needs to update its public safety offices, which operate from what once was a livery on the downtown historic fountain circle. The manager said the city does have the capability to use an increased tax millage to pay off bonds. "It's the best idea but it costs a large amount of money," Tarkiewicz said, adding that the estimate for the 65,000-square foot facility produced "sticker—shock" among officials. Redstone Architects, Inc. , following a five-month study, shared a proposed design with efforts at consolidating Marshall Police, MSP along with the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) into a single building on nearly 10 acres of city land, which is south of Interstate 94 on old US-27, north of Marshall. "It's the money," Marshall City Manager Marshall City Manager Tom Tarkiewicz said. Currently, the CCSO operates from Battle Creek. "Marshall is moving forward," the manager said, adding that he will investigate state grants to defray costs. |
