NOTTINGHAM City Homes has recruited more than 100 'one in a million' apprentices. One of them, Helen Cort, a 39-year-old single mother of four, started work last year to pursue a career in plumbing. In all, the company – which manages the city council's housing stock – has taken on 161 apprentices since 2005. Once I'd qualified, this field of work didn't have the same appeal, so I looked at the local college's prospectus and plumbing jumped out. These include bricklayers, electricians, plasterers, plumbers, gas engineers, joiners, business administration and Future Jobs Fund trainees. She works in the empty homes repairs team and is currently studying towards her NVQ Level 2 in plumbing. She juggles work and study with supporting her family. Helen said: "I started as an apprentice plumber after spending 14 years bringing up my four children on my own. "I studied for three years for a BTEC National Diploma in electronics. " Work-based learning is being celebrated for Apprenticeship Week, which runs until Friday.
