Urban Chestnut, Civil Life harness solar power

Both The Civil Life and Urban Chestnut breweries have recently put in place solar panels to help them reduce their carbon footprints. " The Civil Life's site includes a link to a page that shows its current and lifetime energy generated and carbon dioxide saved by its solar usage. The data shows that the brewery's solar-generated energy has saved the equivalent of planting 303 trees, and Hafner quotations that his solar panels are liable for about 35 to 40 percent of the brewery's electricity.

Overland-based StraightUp Solar built a 42-panel, 9. Wednesday at Urban Chestnut (3229 Washington Boulevard).

Civil Life (3714 Holt Avenue) owner Jake Hafner had a more maternal motivation behind his solar installation. "Our clients want to support businesses which are environmentally liable," Urban Chestnut brewmaster and co-founder Florian Kuplent says in a statement. Tapping into solar energy was the first step in our plan to minimize the carbon footprint of our little pub. "But this decision also made financial sense for our firm.

"My mother was the driving force behind getting solar panels on our roof," he writes on his brewery's website .
