| Restoration sheds light on grandeur of cathedral
Photographs taken from scaffolding erected behind the altar reveal the majesty of the city's architectural icon. Plasterer Michael Power said it was slow, painstaking work but that the lime would allow the sandstone to breathe. The work complements repointing of the brickwork outside. ''It's not art but it is craft,'' he said. The $200,000 project was funded was a grant from the NSW Heritage Office and National Trust Restoration Fund. Newcastle Dean James Rigney said it was the first major restoration work at the cathedral in 18 years and was slightly ahead of schedule. |
