| Secure your house to relax on vacation Going away for your summer holidays? While many Canadians enjoy travelling, many may not be aware the risk of home burglaries goes up a great deal in the summer. "A big issue right now is social media," Kolobaric says. "No matter how much you would like to, don't announce on Facebook or Twitter that you'll be out of town. A large part of avoiding home burglaries is giving your property the appearance that someone is home. Also, don't forget the exterior of your property, especially the garage. Of all of your 8,000 "friends," one of them may see your vacation as an opportunity. "Even if you're in a rush to beat traffic, make sure all the doors are locked," he says. "One way to simply do this is with Weiser's Smart Code, an electronic keypad deadbolt that can automatically lock behind you. "Most of these break-ins will occur at the beginning of the weekend and several happen due to some fairly obvious oversights on the part of the homeowner. Locks that come with garage doors are frequently easily pried open. Ensure the connecting door between the garage and your house is always locked. "Set up your radio or TV to come on in the evening. Seems obvious, but according to Kolobaric, 50 % of break-ins occur through unlocked doors. Having someone come in to collect mail, mow the lawn, feed the fish or even park in the driveway helps with the appearance, as well. "Set up lights on a motion detector and timed to go on in the evening," Kolobaric says. |
