Council installs thousands of solar panels in Reading
A Berkshire council has completed a project to install more than 2,000 solar panels at 46 sites. Reading Borough Council installed the 2,126 panels on schools, council offices, leisure centres, libraries, businesses and sheltered accommodation. The authority embarked on the project to make use of the national Feed In Tariff, which pays for electricity generated by renewable installations. It says the panels are expected to generate more than 115,000 kWh a year. The council's environment councillor, Paul Gittings, said: "The panels won't only help those involved to save money, small businesses will also improve their green credentials and the high-tech solar equipment can be utilised as an added educational tool for schools to teach pupils about renewable energy. "This project shows the council's commitment to making sure Reading becomes the green energy capital of the country." Two men are jailed for money laundering following a £2.3m fraud against the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA).
