Former Maynards building lands top property award

SUCCESS was sweet last night as a project which transformed a former confectionery factory landed a leading property award.

"The hotel is the Sandman Signature group's first investment in the United Kingdom and whilst being stylish and contemporary, a number of the historical parts of the original building have been maintained, including the Blue Star on the east elevation that signified excellent quality.

Mr Furniss, director at BNP Paribas Real Estate in Newcastle, said: "Despite continued uncertainty within the sector, the standard of entries this year has been phenomenal, with nominations ranging from innovative small-scale schemes, through to multi-million pound sustainable developments.

The commercial property award went to the Sandman Signature Hotel in Newcastle, converted from the former Se centre captures the essence of Durham as a world heritage site and praised its contemporary design which has managed to conserve the original fabric of the Almshouses.

It also took the regeneration award and was highly commended in the design , but it is also highly sustainable.

The judges praised the company for their vision in choosing to bring back to life an important building that had fallen by the wayside.
