Construction sector growth 'is important for the health of the economy'

Promoting growth within the UK's construction sector has been highlighted as one of the main drivers of future growth for the country.

The New Rules of Measurement suite of documents aim to provide a simple framework for those operating in the field to maintain more thorough documentation on developments, including data pertaining to the lifecycle of a building for sustainability, efficiency and costs.

He made his comments after the latest announcement from the Office for National Statistics revealed the United Kingdom has entered a double-dip recession, following last quarter's disappointing fall in GDP of 0.

Brian Berry, chief executive of the FMB, said: "Construction is absolutely essential to the wellbeing of the wider economy as a result of variety and quantity of jobs it creates, from apprentice bricklayers to world leading architects.

Mr Berry added that is a "sad fact" that the UK construction industry has now been in a state of recession for further than four years.

"Every £1 spent on construction generates £2.

Other measures which the FMB is keen to see implemented include the government applying more pressure on banks to lend to developers, along with the opening up of more land for projects in order to help ease the ongoing housing crisis.

Earlier this month, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) published its new 'Black Book' of guidance for the delivery of best practice in the building and construction sector.

It was described by Rics as the "most important" publication by the organisation for the last 30 years.
