Greenwich residents victimized by chimney scams

In the wake of multiple reported incidents, Greenwich police are warning residents to beware of scams run by contractors claiming to supply chimney-cleaning services.

Gray said to avoid being victimized by the scams, residents should avoid paying cash to chimney cleaners and should ask cleaners to verify their business credentials, including their contact number, location and Connecticut Homes Improvement Registration Number.

Furthermore to the financial losses suffered by residents, Gray said the scams can also create a serious and potentially deadly safety concern because scammers will often improperly install chimney liners.

"We have seen liners dropped down chimneys with no effort to attach them to boilers, or hot water heaters," Gray said. " . Other service's often offered are chimney waterproofing and chimney caps which often are not required.

If a contractor gives any excuse as to why he or she can't provide his or her business credentials or is acting suspiciously, Gray recommended residents call police.
