Capturing the timelessness, architectural relevance and community impact of the Hoover Dam, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts was designed to be an enduring centerpiece for the arts in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada. With these practical purposes in mind, the designers of The Smith Center focused on a "masculine art deco" design, placing it in a modern context that is extremely rich in detail. Utilizing top quality materials and unique features, such as Indiana limestone for the exterior, terrazzo floors in the Reynolds Hall boxes and full first-floor, sun-lit dressingrooms for visiting performers, designers of The Smith Center spared nothing to turn abuilding into an experience. The Smith Center assembled an internationally renowned design team that includes: David M. as the executive architect, Akusticks for acoustical design and Fisher Dachs Associates for theater planning. • President and CEO Myron Martin credits his passion for the performing arts to a fourth grade field trip. Smith Center for the Performing Arts opens its doors. The Smith Center utilizes a one-level floor plan that allows patrons to move chairs around to their liking, provides flexibility to wheelchair bound patrons and reduces safety concerns associated with a typical multi-level structure. FUN FACTS • The Smith Center for the Performing Arts is the first performing arts center of itssize and scope that will be Silver LEED certified. • The Smith Center bell tower produces melodies covering four octaves, using 47individual bells, turning the whole building into a musical instrument. Additionally, its roof contains a 12-inch thick slab ofconcrete, with an air gap, and then is layered with another 10 inches of interior sound deafening material to prevent other outside noise.
