Supermarket Aldi's plans for historic pub set to be thrown out

CONTROVERSIAL plans to bulldoze an historic pub and build a supermarket are to go under the spotlight. It would open from 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sundays. The scheme was previously thrown out because the Victorian pub in Nantwich Road is on a local list of buildings of historic and architectural interest. But a report to the council states: "This fine building complements the buildings either side and is a crucial part of the historic character of the road. Aldi's planning application states: "The design has been thoroughly revisited. "The council has a preference for the reuse of listed buildings. What has been achieved is a a lot more indigenous solution. Some say they are 'strongly opposed' to the demolition of a landmark building and have raised concerns about extra traffic. But others living nearby argue the scheme can help clean up an eyesore. The proposal has divided residents. And officers at Cheshire East Council are now urging councillors to refuse the amended plans when they meet on Wednesday. " The 1,348 square metre store would have 85 parking spaces and create 20 jobs. " Trentham-based surveyors and valuers Rae and Co had been instructed by Aldi to market the pub a year ago but no offers were received.
